What boat insurance covers

A boat policy covers physical damage to the hull, motor and equipment, your liability if you injure someone or damage property on the water, medical payments and often the trailer. A homeowners policy provides very little watercraft coverage, so a boat of any real size needs its own policy.

Why it matters

Boats are costly to repair, and an incident on the water can involve other boats, swimmers and docks. The liability side of a boat policy matters as much as the hull coverage, and where the boat sits during hurricane season matters to both.

Who it is for

Owners of center consoles, skiffs, pontoons, sailboats and personal watercraft kept in Cedar Point, Swansboro, Cape Carteret, Emerald Isle, Morehead City or Atlantic Beach, whether trailered, in a slip or in dry storage.

Here, specifically

Bogue Sound, the White Oak River, Bogue Inlet and the ocean beyond are different water. The application asks where the boat is used and kept, how it is secured when a storm is named, and whether it is trailered home. Named-storm haul-out coverage is available on some policies.

What a policy can include

  • Hull, motor and equipment
  • Watercraft liability
  • Medical payments
  • Uninsured boater coverage
  • Trailer coverage
  • Named-storm haul-out reimbursement where available

How a quote goes

  1. 01

    A conversation first

What you are protecting, how it is used, and what has changed since the last policy was written.

  2. 02

We look at the options available

Not every insurer writes every risk. We identify the options that fit the property, the vehicle or the business, and compare them.

  3. 03

    We read for gaps

Deductibles, exclusions and limits, not just the headline number, so nothing surprises you later.

  4. 04

    Plain English, zero pressure

We walk you through what each option does and leave the decision with you.

Questions we get about boat insurance

Does my homeowners policy cover my boat?
Only in a very limited way, if at all. Homeowners policies cap watercraft coverage at small amounts and exclude most liability on the water. A boat with a motor of any size should have its own policy.
